Sanjiv (Sunil Dutt) is a carefree, fun-loving, impetuous, exuberant young man with a passion for living the exciting, modern way, with no thought for the morrow.  His mother (Mumtaz Begum) dotes on him and nothing that her son does is ever wrong in her eyes, even his mature playfulness! His father (Bir Sakhuja), well, he is only a silent spectator of his  son’s antics,  only occasiona- lly giving vent to his pent-up feelings at the thought that  his  son never seems to grow up to be a man !

Sushma (Waheeda Rehman) is a petite, pretty, captivating lady with a dazzling smile and impish brain. She has been orphaned very early in life. She is surrounded by four uncles, each of whom has a different viewpoint in life. They are Johnny Walker, Dhoomal, David and Rashid Khan.  They stand   around   her like the four posts of a bed, each thinking that he is Shushma’s chosen guardian and therefore she must conform only to his individual wish and pattern of life. So, Sushma is the flower and her uncles, four thorns, and whichever way the girl turns, a thorn must prick her!

But one fine day, Sanjiv meets Sushma and knows that his search for his dream-girl is over.  If the attraction is mutual, Sushma does not, on her part, show it. But Sanjiv’s wooing is tempestuous! Even if the girl were made of stone, she could not fail   to   be impressed   by   Sanjiv's    gaiety    and    earnest    love-making. But as it happens, Sushma is only human, and by degrees, she succumbs to Sanjiv’s approaches and gives her heart to him completely. But openly, Sushma dare not entertain Sunjiv as her lover, nor look upon him  as her future  husband,  for  how  is she going  to  satisfy  her  four   terrible   uncles,   each   one   of   whom has his own fxed idea as to the type of husband Sushma should have ! Uncle Johnny is the gay, rock-n-roll loving, English apeing, happy-go-lucky type.  So Sushma’s future husband too must   be like   him.   Dhoomal   is a devotee   of  Ram,   spending   most  of   his  time on  prayer,  contemplation  and  reading   the   holy   Geeta.   Sushma must look for a man like himself! David is the great dramatist, so Sushma better find a man who is the perfect stage artist!  Rashid Khan is a physical culturist.  To him body care   is a   sacred   thing. Oh, Sushma! However are you going to get a husband who can combine these four, terribly diverse, diametrically opposite personalities!

But  that  is  the  beauty  and  charm   of   this   screen-fare   titled EK PHOOL CHAR KANTE which sets two young hearts a very complicated problem to solve, and it is the mode of solution that provides on the screen, a type of entertainment you have never dreamt of till today ! So come along. With your near and dear ones, to your favorite theatre and be regaled with a rousing, merry, merry entertainment!!!
